Petrochemical Plant Consulting – Ensuring Structural Integrity

Providing petrochemical plant engineering support, including structural & vibration analysis, metallurgical services, weld consulting, corrosion and risk analysis.

Our experience includes assisting in design, startup, commissioning and structural / safety analysis, as well as API 579-1 Fitness for Service on chemical plants, offshore structures, refineries and other facilities – ensuring structural integrity, reducing risk and controlling your total cost of ownership.

FEA Model of Vessel in Petrochemical Plant

Structural analysis of a vessel subjected to a vacuum loading at elevated temperature – to determine instantaneous (linear and non-linear) buckling and long term creep buckling responses.

  • Petrochemical plants and refineries contain some of the harshest environments – subjected to extreme pressures and temperatures, as well as highly corrosive environments. These plants continually face plant aging concerns, which may lead to safety issues, as well as costly unplanned maintenance and outages. We provide engineering evaluations on such issues to API B31.1 (Power Piping) and API B31.3 (Process Piping) – as well as other Codes including API and ASME.

Process equipment often involves thermal mixing, which causes high cycle thermal fatigue and turbulent flow, which causes erosion and erosion/corrosion. High velocity flow produces vibration, potential water hammer and flow conditions sometimes resulting in mechanical instabilities and subsequent flow-induced collapse.

In order to design, build and operate such equipment, engineering expertise in metallurgy, welding and elevated temperature applications is required. In addition, this equipment is asked to perform safely and efficiently to – and often beyond its design life – in order to minimize plant life cycle costs.

Our team of engineers have over 30 years experience in resolving corrosion, weld, seismic/vibration and other plant issues. Because of our advanced experience – we’ve been called to provide Engineering Expert Witness Testimony on various complex issues.

    Examples Include:

    • Pressure Vessels
    • Heat Exchangers
    • Condensors
    • Compressors
    • Steam Generators
    • Superheaters
    • Evaporators
    • Piping/ Valves

Fatigue is one of the key contributing factors to the degradation of aging components. We perform fatigue and thermal fatigue analysis to ensure structural integrity – and to keep you compliant to Specifications & Codes.
