Fitness for Service Evaluations - OCE

Performing API-579/ ASME FFS-1 Fitness-For-Service evaluations to demonstrate structural integrity on tanks, vessels, silos and other process equipment. These evaluations are used to make run/ repair/ replace decisions.

Fitness for Service (FFS) evaluations are performed to API and other relevant Codes to determine whether damaged equipment (such as distortions or cracks) found by inspection is suitable for continued service. Fitness for Service is an important aspect of an Asset Integrity Program as most viable step in determining the safety and financial risk factors related to component repair or replacement. In the current competitive marketplace, extending the life of existing structures and components has become increasingly important in minimizing the total cost of ownership.

There are many factors that affect plant aging. Evaluations ensure that pressurized equipment containing flaws which have been identified by inspection can continue to operate. Assessments include:

  • Fatigue Life Assessment

  • Bulges and out-of-roundness distortion

  • Creep, stress corrosion, fatigue, and corrosion-fatigue crack growth

  • Evaluation of high temperature equipment for creep and creep-fatigue

  • Dents, gouges and dent-gouge combinations

  • Fire damage

  • High Temperature Hydrogen Attack

  • Heater tube remaining life
    • Thermal and mechanical fatigue
    • Tank shell and edge settlement
    • Local PWHT of weld repairs
    • Modeling of weld residual stresses
    • Wind-induced vibration of towers & stacks
    • Mechanical vibration
    • Blast loading and other dynamic effects
    • Determination of failure modes
    • Fatigue of welded joints
  • Fracture mechanics

We conducted a Fitness-for-Service evaluation on a tank for a brewery in accordance with API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 2007.
